My Son from Hoi An: sunrise or afternoon, bus or boat?
Updated October 14, 2026 · 6 min read
My Son is not an extension of Hoi An Ancient Town. It is a Cham sanctuary in a mountain basin, with tower-temples developed between the fourth and thirteenth centuries. The useful booking decision is therefore not whether to see “more old buildings”, but when to visit and how much transport you want included.
Early morning: cooler and more focused
The My Son early-morning or sunset tour with Champa food is listed from €14.40 for 4–5 hours and has 3,681 reviews. Its early option is designed to arrive before the strongest heat and larger daytime groups; the operator lists coffee and a Champa breakfast for that option.
Choose early morning if the temples are your priority and you can accept a very early pickup. The softer light is useful for photographs, but “sunrise tour” does not necessarily mean standing among the monuments at the instant the sun rises. Check the pickup and site-arrival times shown for your date.
Afternoon: performance and river return
The afternoon version suits travellers who dislike early alarms. The same listing describes a Champa performance, bánh mì and a Thu Bon River boat trip for a specific option. That wording matters: a river return is not automatically part of every My Son booking.
Boat plus bus creates a more varied journey, but it is slower and weather can affect the river section. A road-only return is simpler when you have dinner reservations or little tolerance for delays. Neither transport choice changes the archaeological site itself.
What a guide adds
UNESCO describes My Son as the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom for much of its existence and highlights its Indian Hindu influences. Without context, the surviving brick towers can blur into one another. A good guide explains the temple groups, restoration and damage without turning the walk into a list of dates.
Do not leave marked visitor routes. UNESCO notes that unexploded ordnance remains an issue within parts of the wider buffer zone. This is not a place for independent shortcuts through vegetation.
Our verdict
Pick early morning for lower heat and a visit centred on the monuments. Pick afternoon for a gentler start and, only where the selected option says so, the performance and river journey. For most visitors, the guided half-day is enough; My Son rewards attention more than a packed list of add-ons. See other choices on our day trips from Hoi An page.
